WWF’s 2012 Living Planet Report, produced with the European Space Agency, the Zoological Society of London and the Global Footprint Network, reveals that humans are using 50 per cent more resources than the Earth can provide, and will need the equivalent of two planets by 2030 to support current rates of consumption and pollution.

Consultation: greenhouse gas emissions intensity of the South Australian economy

The Government of South Australia has recently completed its review of the Climate Change and Greenhouse Emissions Reduction Act 2007. The review covered many issues including the development of an interim emissions reductions target as a way to support emissions reductions in the shorter term.

Stakeholder feedback indicated that there are divergent views within the community on whether or not to introduce an interim target. The Premier’s Climate Change Council also provided the State Government with advice on the review, recommending that the Government work with industry and the community to determine appropriate policies and targets to support emissions reductions in the short term, with a view to including such targets in regulations under the Act.

The Government accepted the advice of the PCCC on this matter and has developed a consultation paper to seek further feedback to determine whether there is support for a proposed greenhouse gas emissions target for 2020, to be based on the greenhouse gas emissions intensity of the South Australian economy.

Individuals, community organisations, governments and businesses are invited to submit written comments on the review by c.o.b. Friday, 11 May 2012.

For more information on the Greenhouse Gas Intensity Target for South Australia, please click here.

The consultation paper is attached to this email and instructions for providing comment are available from the South Australian climate change legislation page.

Rising sea levels are expected to spark the largest movement of displaced people in human history. The geo-political challenge of rising waters and homeless populations is vast.
